Gunmen believed to members of the terrorist, Boko Haram, sect, early Sunday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, took on security operatives who had entered their stronghold for patrol.
The State’s Commissioner of Police, Patrick Egbuniwe, confirmed the shoot-out, Sunday, while the duel was still on, describing it as “usual.”
“Gunmen as usual, have engaged our security operatives in a shoot-out,” he said.
The battle extended into the mid-mornings and the police commissioner could not confirm the casualty rate as at the time of this report.
“Other parts of the town are calm and security operatives are on top of the situation,’’ Mr. Egbuniwe said.
Meanwhile, many residents have deserted the streets of Damaturu for safety.
Damaturu is a major bastion of the Boko Haram sect. Six soldiers and one civilian were killed on August 5, in a suicide bomb attack, along Gashua road in Damaturu.
