The Federal Government has officially reacted to the statement of peaceful negotiations made by the Boko Haram sect, saying it welcomes the talks.
A man who claimed to be the deputy leader of the sect had called the Voice of America on Tuesday saying the sect had commenced negotiations with the Federal Government (FG).
In a statement, on Saturday, signed by Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information, the government said it “welcomes any initiative that will usher in peace, security and tranquility in the country, especially in the light of the security challenges that we have faced in the last two years.”
Mr. Maku also admitted the government was in talks with the sect by agreeing to the Boko Haram’s statement that government representatives were in negotiation with the group.
“Federal government wishes to reiterate its willingness to listen to the grievances of the sect.  It is our hope that this process will lead to restoration of peace, security and tranquility to Northern Nigeria,” the minister said.
Mr. Maku also stated that the government “takes special notice of the disclosure by the sect in its statement that there are individuals and groups in the society who have been using the name of the group to attack and kill innocent Nigerians for their own selfish ends.”
The Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for several attacks and bombings in Northern Nigeria that have claimed hundreds of lives.
